Introduction
As environmentalists we should be concerned about the environmental impact of the Israeli bombardment of Gaza Strip particularly in the aftermath of the latest bombings as it is a shared responsibility to protect the well-being of the people, plants and animals living in the region.
Here are some points highlighting the environmental issues in Gaza today.
Destruction of Critical Infrastructure
The recent bombings in Gaza have caused significant damage to vital infrastructure, including water treatment plants, sewage systems, and electrical grids. At least 70 industrial facilities had been destroyed. Most sewage pumping stations and four out of five wastewater treatment plants have stopped operating, causing sewage and solid waste to accumulate in the streets and become a health hazard, according to OCHA.
Water Scarcity
Gaza already faces a severe water crisis, with the majority of its water unfit for consumption. The damage to water treatment facilities has further restricted access to clean water. According to the United Nations, 97% of the water in Gaza is unfit for human consumption. “People are now consuming brackish water from agricultural wells, triggering serious concerns over the spread of waterborne diseases,” {UNRWA)
Sewage Contamination
The bombings have disrupted sewage systems, leading to raw sewage being discharged into the Mediterranean Sea. This not only harms marine life but also poses a severe health risk to the local population.
Air Pollution
The release of pollutants from damaged buildings and infrastructure, including the burning of materials from the bombs, has led to increased air pollution in Gaza. This has consequences not only for the environment but also for public health, as it can lead to respiratory problems and other health issues.
Waste Management
Garbage is piling up on the streets of Gaza, and inside shelters for the displaced, due to inadequate waste removal services which is raising fears of a health crisis. If the garbage continues to pile up it will cause diseases and illnesses, to which medical supplies are limited.
Biodiversity
The bombings and conflict in the region also have an impact on the local flora and fauna. Natural habitats have been disrupted, and there is a risk of long-term damage to the ecosystem. Many pets and animals have already been killed by Isreali airstrikes.
Conclusion
The massacre and ethnic cleansing of the innocent Palestinian people, children and elderly and the destruction of the environment is unacceptable collective punishment. We must stand up against this oppression and call for freedom of the Palestinian people and sustainable solutions to the environmental crisis. You can make a difference by supporting many charities who are providing much needed short term and long term aid to Gaza.
